In many Asian nations, notably the Philippines, Fish Ball Soup is a popular and comfortable street food meal. It serves fish balls in a savory broth, which are round or oval-shaped fish paste or fish cake balls. This meal is easy to make and serves as a light and pleasant snack or appetizer. Fish Ball Soup is a tasty and filling meal popular as a street food snack in Asian nations. It's simple to cook at home and ideal for warming up on a cold day or serving as a quick and delightful snack.
The first step in making this fish ball soup recipe is to make the fish paste. The paste is made from minced fish fillet, tapioca starch, salt, pepper, and scallions. I do the job with my reliable food processor. The ice cubes, on the other hand, thicken the mixture to the point where it may be formed into ball-shaped shapes.
The fish balls are cooked in a vegetable broth that is simmering. After scooping each ball, I generally throw it in the broth and wait for it to float. That means I can start putting the vegetables in now.
Here's a basic recipe for making Fish Ball Soup:
Ingredients:
For the Fish Balls:
- 1 package of fish balls (readily available in Asian grocery stores)
- Cooking oil for frying
For the Soup:
- 4-5 cups water
- 1-2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1-2 tablespoons fish sauce (patis) or soy sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional additions: sliced green onions, chopped cilantro, and a dash of chili sauce for extra flavor
Instructions:
1. Fry the Fish Balls:
- In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the cooking oil over medium-high heat.
- Fry the fish balls in the heated oil until they are golden brown and crispy. This often takes 3-5 minutes. Drain the fish balls on paper towels after removing them from the oil.
2. Prepare the Soup Base:
- Heat a tiny quantity of oil in a separate saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the minced garlic and diced onion are aromatic and transparent.
3. Add Water:
- Pour in 4-5 cups of water with the sautéed garlic and onion.
4. Season the Soup:
- To add flavor, add fish sauce (patis) or soy sauce to the saucepan. You can modify the quantity to your liking.
- Season the soup to taste with salt and black pepper. Remember that fish sauce is already salty, so begin with a tiny quantity of salt and adjust as needed.
- If you want it hot, add a splash of chili sauce or hot sauce to the soup.
5. Bring to a Simmer:
- Enable the soup to come to a slow boil for a few minutes to enable the flavors to combine.
6. Add Fish Balls:
- Once the soup base has been well-seasoned and is boiling, add the fried fish balls to the pot carefully. Allow them to cook through for around 2-3 minutes in the soup.
7. Serve:
- If preferred, garnish the Fish Ball Soup with sliced green onions and chopped cilantro. Enjoy!
