It's a one-of-a-kind blend of flavors and textures. Tofu Steak Fried in Honey and Rosemary with Tuna and Tomato Sauce is an exceptional flavor combination that mixes the sweet and savory notes of honey and rosemary with the deep umami of tuna and tomato sauce. It's a one-of-a-kind and delicious dish that will satisfy your taste buds.
Tofu has traditionally been a high-protein food. It's ideal for people who are striving to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. The problem is that tofu itself is fairly bland. So I cooked it in honey and oil, along with additional spices like salt, pepper, and rosemary. My nutritious sauce of tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms gave the dish a unique flavor and texture. The end product is a delightful, colorful, and nutritious tofu supper.
This recipe mixes honey's sweetness and rosemary's aromatic overtones with a thick and acidic tomato-based tuna sauce. It gives a contrast of textures with the crispy tofu and the sauce, resulting in a delectable and one-of-a-kind dinner.
Here's a recipe for preparing this dish:
Ingredients:
For the Tofu Steak:
- 1 block of extra-firm tofu, sliced into thick steaks
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary (or fresh rosemary if available)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooking oil for frying
For the Tuna and Tomato Sauce:
- 1 can of canned tuna, drained
- 1 can (14 oz) of diced tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried basil (or fresh basil if available)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 100 grams Enoki mushrooms
- 60 grams Shiitake mushrooms
- 1-2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions:
1. Marinate the Tofu Steak:
- Combine the honey, dried rosemary, salt, and pepper in a small plate. Coat the tofu steaks with the marinade and let aside for 15-20 minutes.
2. Heat Oil and Fry Tofu:
- Heat the cooking oil in a big skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Carefully place the marinated tofu steaks in the pan and cook until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 4-5 minutes each side. Set them aside once done.
3. Prepare the Tuna and Tomato Sauce:
- Warm the olive oil in the same skillet or a separate pan over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until the onion is transparent.
4. Add Tuna and Tomatoes:
- To the pan, add the drained canned tuna and chopped tomatoes (or tomato sauce). To blend, stir everything together thoroughly. If using whole tomatoes, use a wooden spoon to split them apart.
5. Season the Sauce:
- Season with dried basil, dry oregano, salt, and pepper to taste. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If you're using fresh herbs, add them now.
6. Simmer:
- Enable the sauce to boil for 10-15 minutes to enable the flavors to combine and the sauce to thicken.
7. Serve:
- To serve, arrange the crispy tofu steaks on a platter and top with the tuna and tomato sauce. Enjoy!
